This course is intended to teach emergency responders how to perform initial site characterization and air monitoring tasks on emergency scenes. This is a common task for fire department engine companies and other first arriving resources when responding to carbon monoxide alarms and other emergencies. Topics include: Discuss different types of hazardous materials detection and identification instruments; different survey techniques; advantages and disadvantages of different types of instruments; and includes hands-on practical skills using air monitoring simulators. This course also meets the objectives of NFPA 1072 2017 edition for Hazardous Materials Operations core and mission specific competencies and OSHA 2019 CFR 1910.120.

Special requirements

• SCBA and protective clothing requirements apply to this program. Please bring gear with you to this class. All air cylinders must be within hydrostatic date or will not be refilled. Please assure that you bring one spare cylinder and that all equipment is sufficiently marked for ownership.
