Group practicing tai chi in a sunny fieldThe Tai Chi for Health Institute was founded in 2010 by Dr. Paul Lam and a number of his colleagues with the intention of building tai chi programs designed to prevent and manage various chronic health and physical conditions.

Tai chi, a form of mixed martial arts, exists in several different forms that revolve around the same principles: integration of the mind and body, control of bodily movements and breathing, internal energy production and the cultivation of “qi” — or “life energy.”

The practice of tai chi teaches its participants to perform flowing, powerful movements through weight transference, making it a major component of fall prevention and balance quality.

Studies have shown that tai chi improves muscular strength, flexibility, fitness and immunity, while enhancing quality of life and decreasing the overall incidence of pain.
