A win-win program

University students provide free tax help as they learn how to serve a wide range of audiences and acquire experience they can’t get in the classroom.

It’s often said that money talks—but sometimes it can be difficult to have that conversation. The Missouri Taxpayer Education Initiative is here to help.

Through this hands-on financial education program, IRS-certified student volunteers discuss and prepare tax returns at no charge for people with incomes of $60,000 or less at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. VITA program volunteers also provide free tax help to people with disabilities, the elderly and English-as-a-second-language taxpayers. VITA sites, set up at community and neighborhood centers throughout the nation, offer electronic tax filing with direct deposit refunds.

Service is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
