Move Across Missouri (MOVE) is for youth who like to have fun, stay in shape and feel their best!

Wouldn't it be great if you could get credit for all the activity in your life? Now you can! Whether you're into weightlifting, hunting, rock climbing or even throwing darts, you can enjoy tracking minutes and earning points while you move! Challenge yourself or compete with others. Join MOVE as an individual, a family or as a 4-H club, and an online system will help you keep track o your progress and goals. Awards and prizes are included, so join MOVE!

      Here's what youth and adults need to do to participate:

      • Enroll in the Move Across Missouri (MOVE) project (HF775) in 4HOnline in their profile by May 1. Enrollment in 4-H MOVE does not count as a part of county limits on projects.

      Log your activity

      • Using a paper tracking system found at the bottom of this page, youth and their families can “log” the number of minutes they accumulate throughout the year and during the competitive component of the MOVE program (scroll to the bottom of the website page and click “My Move Activity Log”). Record keeping through the paper tracking system is important because the competition period will be from February 1 to April 30. 4-Hers and adults can register for the competitive event as individuals and/or as part of a team. An individual MOVEr may also be a part of a team. A team can consist of a family or members of a 4-H club or group. Youth and families will submit their total number of minutes logged throughout the competitive period at the end in 4HOnline. The final reporting take place inside of a no cost event registration that will only be open at the end of the competition period from May 1 through May 15. MOVE awards will be provided.

        • Logging into your 4HOnline account.
        • Go to My Member List and scroll down to the bottom of the page.
        • The last box is Register a Member in an Event:
          • Select a member
          • Choose Move Across Missouri
          • When the orange Registration Types box pops up, click the Register button on the far right.
        • Once inside registration, there is a place to put your team and team leader's name if you had one. Log only your minutes here.

      • Participants who sign up for MOVE before May 1 will receive a MOVE promotion item and certificate.
      • During our competition period February 1 through April 30, individuals and teams who log the most minutes in each county and the state will receive awards. County individual and team awards are valued at $10 and $25, respectively. State individual and team awards are valued at $50 and $250, respectively.

    Move with service

    Here are some community service ideas that involve MOVEment:

    • Conduct a bicycle rodeo to help children learn bicycle safety
    • Organize a safe walk to school event
    • Assist an after-school little league or other sports program for younger children
    • Clean yards of neighbors who cannot do it themselves
    • Hold a sports contest
    • Teach others about a sport you enjoy and know a lot about
    • Clean up trash at a community event or county fair
    • Clean up vacant lot
    • Clean an elderly neighbor's driveway and sidewalk after a snowfall
    • Set up a recycling system for your home and participate in your neighborhood curbside recycling pick-up
    • Create a campaign to encourage biking and walking
    • Rake leaves, shovel snow, clean gutters or wash windows for a senior citizen
    • Go for a walk with a senior citizen in your community
    • Hold an afternoon dance for a local nursing home
    • During bad weather, visit seniors to make sure they have everything they need
    • Serve as a coach for a youth sports team

      Materials: Large room or open space outdoors; music; microphone (optional)

      Ask volunteers or 4-Hers to lead dance instructions. Try something new like Latin samba, Russian folk, clogging, Polish Polka, swing, country line, or ballroom dancing. Good instructors will help make sure participants learn proper techniques so they are successful! Dancing is fun and good exercise – participants don’t even realize they’re working out!

      The ABCs of exercise

      Materials: None

      How do you create every letter in the alphabet using just your body? While participants wiggle, squirm and problem solve, they are also getting good exercise – enhancing flexibility, agility, strength and awareness of their body.

      Bounce the ball

      Materials: two or three wiffle or ping pong balls; one sheet

      You will need at least four people for this game. Each person holds a corner and side of the sheet – stretched taut. Place the balls in the center of the sheet. Participants shake the sheet causing the balls to bounce in the air. The object of the game is to keep the balls bouncing in the air and keep them from bouncing off the sheet onto the floor.

      Tunnel time

      Materials: None

      This activity helps participants stretch out their backs. Participants bend over on all fours (hands and feet) and lift their belly up to the ceiling – hold stomach in as far as possible and round the back. Choose the smallest person in the group to be the “crawler.” At the count of “three” the participants will get in position and remain there until the crawler has a chance to go through the tunnel. When the crawler reaches the end, the tunnel can collapse!

      Stretch and twist

      Materials: None

      Participants reach their left hand behind their back, placing it on their right back, hip. Place the other hand on top of their head and gently tilt to the right. They should feel a stretch down the neck and across the upper shoulder. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. This is a good activity if a group has been sitting for a long period of time.

      Stir the soup

      Materials: None

      Each participant will find a partner to do this stretching activity. Both partners sit on the floor, face to face, with their feet touching in a wide straddle. They reach out and grab each other’s writs and move side to side and forward and back. Keep knees straight! Partners can try making circles – small ones and then larger ones as muscles loosen up.

      Participants can sign up as an individual or as part of a team. How many people can be on a team?

      As many as you choose! A team may be a family, club members, the entire club and other 4-H groups. Team awards are calculated by dividing the number of minutes or points by the number of team members, so team size does not matter.

      Does a team need to have a leader?

      Yes! When registering a team, you will be asked to name a team leader. The team leader does not have to be an adult. The only responsibility of the team leader is to encourage members to be physically active and communicate with the MOVE program coordinator at the end of the MOVE competition.

      How does MOVE connect with 4-H projects?

      Excellent question! Activity that you may already be doing in many 4-H projects can count in MOVE, such as shooting sports, bowling, biking, hiking and camping.

      Are there any good resources for teaching youth how to cook healthy after-school snacks?

      The two websites that we recommend are Kids-A-Cookin' and the Missouri Families website. They have plenty of information on easy recipes and making cooking fun for youth.
