She joined the University of Missouri (MU) staff in 1984, employed at the MU Counseling Center and later, moving to the Department of Psychology working on cancer grants through the Missouri Department of Health.

She shifted to MU Extension in 1991 as a grants/operations manager with the Missouri Small Business Development Center (SBDC) state office. A strong interest in computers facilitated working with staff throughout Missouri on software matters, specifically proprietary programs required for reporting to government funding institutions. Responsibilities included reporting (financial, statistical and program narratives), managing client satisfaction surveys, assuring quality control standards and client confidentiality, managing special short-term pilot projects, and writing/maintaining the standard operating procedures manual documenting processes while supervising a six-person team. In 1995, Jean launched the SBDC's first website.

In 1997, Jean left full-time work at Mizzou to manage Boone Hospital Center's (BHC) website, while continuing to manage the SBDC and associated program's website.

Jean returned to the MU Extension SBDC full-time in 1999 to work on several national internet efforts. Responsibilities evolved into development and management of a content-rich website for the MU Extension Business Development Program and intranet. She instituted social media for the program and developed a monthly email newsletter and special marketing promotions from 2006-2017, cultivating a mailing list of 20,000+ opted-in subscribers.

Jean was reassigned to Nexus@Mizzou in July 2017.
