ROCHEPORT, Mo. – Grape growers can meet with one of the world’s leading viticulture scientists as part of the fourth annual Missouri Grape Growers Association Viticulture Field Day and Missouri Vintners Association meeting.
The event kicks off June 27 at Les Bourgeois Vineyards Blufftop Bistro in Rocheport, says Dean Volenberg, University of Missouri Extension viticulturist.
Richard Smart, pioneer in wine grape canopy management, will talk with growers at Vintage Restaurant at Stone Hill Winery in Hermann on June 28. He also will travel to Augusta, Mo., to meet with growers at Montelle Winery. Grape growers interested in attending these talks should contact Dean Volenberg at email@example.com or 573-882-0476.
Smart’s techniques led to improvements in yield and wine quality and reduced disease in high-vigor vineyards. Volenberg says Smart is considered a foremost authority on canopy management and protocols on grapevine trunk diseases.
Smart began lecturing and writing about carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning and the implications for the wine industry in the 1970s. He considers the wine industry to be the “canary in the coal mine” for agriculture.
Smart wrote an award-winning book on canopy management, “Sunlight Into Wine.” He served as the viticulture editor of the Oxford Companion to Wine and has published extensively.
The Missouri Wine Marketing and Research Council sponsors Smart’s visit to the event.
