Leadership Republic begins in April; registration underway for individuals and employers

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Registration is now underway for a Leadership Republic class.

Leadership Republic is a leadership and personal development program provided by University of Missouri Extension. In 2020, Republic joins nearly 40 other Missouri cities like Camdenton, Lamar, Ozark, Ash Grove and Springfield with a community-focused leadership class.

“The class teaches participates how to have influence in their neighborhoods and communities,” said David Burton, county engagement specialist with University of Missouri Extension and a resident of Republic. “The class also creates a network of individuals that want to lead and volunteer in the community.”

The Greene County MU Extension Council, Greene County Commission and the Republic Chamber of Commerce are partners in this program.

Leadership Republic beings in April with monthly meetings that run until December. Classes meet at the Chamber office / board room in Republic. Classes are 8:30 a.m. to 11:30.

Participants then dismiss to the Chamber lunch meeting at the community center. Leadership Republic class members pay for lunch (discounted at $10 per person) and enjoy networking and a guest speaker. Special speakers are arranged by the Republic Chamber and MU Extension.

Tentative meeting dates are same as the chamber meeting except when meeting dates conflict with an election. In those cases, the class date is moved and the chamber meeting is optional.

Class projects will be done on “National Good Neighbor Day” which is Sept. 26, 2020. Leadership Republic will have an enrollment cost of $50 per person and the monthly lunch cost of $10 per person is payable at the Chamber office or Recreation Center each month.

“Making this a community success depends a lot on area employers. Local businesses can support their employee’s development by giving them one-half day a month to attend Leadership Republic,” said Burton.
A key reminder for employers: training adds value to people. The MU Extension leadership programs provide that value and training in a local context.
“Then also, there are people here in Republic during the day, farmers and retirees even, that could easily attend during the day and could benefit from the experience,” said Burton. “Grow your network, discover strengths and threats in your community, and learn to lead yourself, in your neighborhood and in your community by enrolling in Leadership Republic.”
Registration can be completed on the MU Extension website. Go to http://extension.missouri.edu/greene and click on the events tab for Greene County programs or search the website for Leadership Republic.
