COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri Gov. Mike Parson appointed John Worden, director of University of Missouri Extension’s Law Enforcement Training Institute, to the state Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.
The appointment reflects the quality of the Law Enforcement Training Institute and its leadership, said MU Vice Chancellor for Extension and Engagement Marshall Stewart.
“The university is extremely pleased to learn of John’s appointment to commission,” Stewart said. “His deep commitment to public service and excellence in peace officer training will benefit the people of Missouri.”
The Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program is the state body responsible for licensing police officers, setting standards and approving curricula for law enforcement training centers, and ensuring compliance with peace officer continuing education requirements. The 11-member POST commission oversees the program as an advisory body to the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
Worden had a 21-year career with the Columbia Police Department before joining MU’s Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI) in 2011. LETI provides basic and advanced law enforcement training as well as animal cruelty investigation programs. Graduates from all 50 states and Canada go on to serve public safety agencies at the local, state and national levels.
Worden was also recently named to lead the development of the MU Center for Excellence in First Responder Education, which will house LETI as well as the university’s Fire and Rescue Training Institute, Emergency Medical Services Education, and Community Emergency Management Program. Worden holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Missouri.
