Travis Witt is the E-Learning Coordinator of the University of Missouri’s Law Enforcement Training Institute. He has served in various law enforcement capacities for 19 years, including the last 3 as an instructor trainer. He teaches a variety of topics including Use of Force, Human Behavior, Cultural Competency, and Communications. Course Description

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive one (1) hour of continuing education credit in the area of "Handling persons with mental health and cognitive impairment issues" as part of the core curricula are of interpersonal studies. The fee for this course is $15. Payment will be collected during the enrollment process.

Police officers are called to handle a variety of issues throughout the country.  One of the types of calls often handled involve a person who is suffering from bipolar symptoms and are in crisis. Statistics show that about 3 percent of the population experience a bipolar disorder in any one year. When a person is experiencing a mental health crisis, it can be extremely frightening and difficult for them. Often times family and friends are not equipped or able to handle these type of situations, and it leaves them to call upon emergency personnel to respond.

The goal of this program is to provide the student with a better understanding of what bipolar disorders are, and the effects on the individual experiencing them. This program will also give some ideas of handling calls that involve individuals who have a mental illness or cognitive impairment.

This program is part three of a five-part series that discusses issues of responding to calls that involve persons with a mental illness. This course covers the POST topical requirement of “Handling persons with mental health and cognitive impairment issues” as part of the core curricula area of Interpersonal Perspectives.

Course Organization

All learners will need to complete a demographic survey in the beginning of the training, an evaluation at the end of the training, and email Travis Witt about the completion of the training.

Through out the training, learners will need to watch the required video in full, then move on to completing the quiz over the video.

Course Completion

The course will be completed when learners have completed watching all assignments, submitting all quizzes, and emailing the Travis Witt of your completion of the course materials.
