This 30-day self-paced course will provide information related to blood borne pathogens, hand hygiene, standard precautions including proper use of personal protective equipment, respiratory hygiene, safe medication and injection practices and other important infection control issues. 1.5 hours (0.15 CEU) credit awarded upon successful completion of the course.

Purpose
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and outbreaks in a variety of Ambulatory Care Settings have been a particular concern by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) since 2009. Investigations of these outbreaks and HAIs have shown they could have been prevented by following basic principles and evidence-based practices for infection prevention and control. This session will provide information related to blood borne pathogens, hand hygiene, standard precautions including proper use of personal protective equipment, respiratory hygiene, safe medication and injection practices and other important infection control issues.

 Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to

  • Identify at least two reasons why HAIs in ambulatory care settings are a major concern.
  • Name the blood-borne pathogens that have caused outbreaks in ambulatory care settings.
  • Verbalize the meaning of the “One and Only Campaign.”
  • Explain at least two advantages of Standard Precautions.

Materials:

To complete this course, you will need the following:

  • Internet access with sufficient bandwidth to watch videos.
  • Speakers or headphones to listen to the videos.
  • A way to print your completion certificate at the end of the course.
