Abstract

This ewe flock budget shows cost and return estimates for a forage based production system birthing lambs in the spring. Feeder lambs are retained and raised on pasture until early winter, targeting holiday markets. While late lambing misses expected seasonally high prices for lightweight lambs in the spring, the livestock production cycle more closely aligns with the natural breeding season and forage production, resulting in relatively lower production risk and winter feeding costs.
