Midwest Region Burn Conference - The Ethics of Burn Care: Navigating moral and clinical ambiguity in the face of complex injury

This event is now virtual!

Burn faculty, fellows, residents, ARNPs/PAs, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Registered Nurses and Social Workers.
This conference will provide additional information and updates for the current understanding of team formation & team dynamics, give an understanding of the opioid abuse epidemic, palliative care role in burn care and review current problems and practices on other burn related topics. The Friday portion of the conference will focus specifically on the ethical delivery of care when dealing with complex trauma and burn. In addition to clinicians, the conference will appeal to those who sit on ethics committees or want to engage in case-based ethical discourse.
Trauma that is likely to result in disability, disfigurement, or loss of function long after the acute condition has been treated, can pose significant ethical questions, especially as they relate to initial care planning. Specifically, these cases highlight difficult ethical questions related to pain management, decision-making capacity, personhood, and resource allocation. This conference will not only specifically address the ethics of burn care, but also explore the clinical and policy dimensions of caring for patients who have experienced severe trauma which will likely result in significant, long-lasting social and physical limitations.
