If you're looking for a fun, innovative resource that will help teens prepare for the challenges of life and the workforce, check out this updated version of a popular curriculum published by MU Extension.

Tackling the Tough Skills for Teens™: A Curriculum Building Skills for Work and Life (Second Edition) offers a fun, innovative approach to positively impacting the lives of young people ages 12 to 18, especially those who are hard-to-reach or at-risk. This curriculum is being used in diverse programs worldwide by educators, youth leaders, social service professionals, and youth workforce development trainers to teach important soft skills to youth.

The teen version of Tackling the Tough Skills™ was created with young people in mind. Teens are not miniature adults. They face different challenges and experiences. The curriculum considers these challenges and experiences as it encourages creative and constructive thinking.

Flexibility is a key feature. Educators may use the curriculum in its entirety or choose sections of exercises to supplement other training materials.

Learn more about the curriculum

The curriculum covers the soft skills of attitude, responsibility, communication, problem solving, workforce preparation, anger management, conflict resolution, critical thinking, self-esteem, stress management and teamwork.

The 245-page curriculum — complete with dozens of original, humorous illustrations that enhance the content  — makes learning fun and engaging. Its easy-to-read format is convenient for educators and effective for participants.

Dynamic group learning experiences promote critical thinking and motivate and challenge participants to get involved. These exercises include original role plays, discussions, games and activities. Frequent and well-paced, the exercises provide a blend of humor and serious content that facilitates learning while encouraging personal reflection and modeling respect for oneself and others.

A key theme stressed throughout the book is: We cannot change anyone's behavior except our own, but sometimes when we change our behavior, other people's reactions change.

The curriculum is packaged in an easy-to-use three-ring binder, complete with 95 illustrated addenda pages that may be copied by educators to use as handouts or projected on a screen. The addenda CD included with the binder makes copying and projecting the addenda easier and saves educators preparation time.
